These colorful woven sashes were one of the major trade items and wearing apparel of the fur trade. Indians, Metis, trappers and voyageurs were among the people wearing this symbol of the fur trade. During the 1800's, they were finger woven by French Canadian women in the L'Assomption region of Quebec which gave rise to the name Assomption Sash. They were in trade by both Northwest company and the Hudson's Bay Co and later made on mechanical looms in England for the Hudson's Bay Co. Charlie Russell, famed Western painter, always wore one from his earliest days in Montana, commenting that he liked the sash better than a belt.
Our woven cotton yarn reproductions are very much like the later wool yarn ones traded by the HBC. The colors are an excellent match to the expensive 19th century finger woven sashes. The most popular color has always been bright red with green, white, royal blue, yellow and orange threads tied at both ends into long fringes. Now also available in a blue/red background same thread colors. (middle in photos)
